Nikolaevsky Palace
Nikolaevsky Palace

The Nikolaev palace, located on the former Blagoveshchenskaya Square (nowadays Truda Square), was built on the project of the architect A.I. Shtakenshneyder for the grand duke Nikolay Nikolaevich, the son tsar  Nicholay I. Construction of the palace came to the end in 1861.

Facades of the palace represent a striking example of the neorenaissance style. Repeating composition methods of the Italian architecture of the XVI century, Shtakenshneyder sated a facade with the stucco works, ornamental sculptural inserts placed alternately by columns and pilasters. The Nikolaevsky palace seems more big than its true sizes because of characteristic «order» elaborations  of facades. The first floor of the palace is decorated with wide Ionic pilasters, the second floor – with the Corinthian columns, and the third –with  short narrow pilasters which create illusion of perspective reduction. The facilitated sculptural decor gives the feeling of more height of the building.
In the decoration of the building the preference was given to the Renaissance and baroque. One of the most interesting works of St. Petersburg’s  architecture  of the XIX century is the front staircase of the palace.
At the end of the XIX century in Nikolaevsky palace there were located  Kseninsky Institution for young ladies to which were admitted the noble semi-orphan girls who lost one of parents was placed.
After October revolution the institute was closed, and the building was transferred to Petrograd Council of Labor Unions. After it renamed into the palace of Work, and in 1923 this name passed also to the area where the Place were located (Work Square).
