Kazan Cathedral (Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan) - Orthodox cathedral of St. Petersburg Diocese of the Russian Church, located at the Kazan Square, 2.

Kazan Cathedral was built to replace the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, which was stored in the icon of Kazan Mother of God. By the end of the XVIII century church building dilapidated and did not meet the general appearance of the Nevsky Prospekt. 
 In 1799 Emperor Paul I, a contest for the drafting of a new cathedral. The contest famous architects of that time: Charles Cameron, Jean Toma de Tomon, Pietro Gonzaga. At the request of Emperor Paul I, the Kazan Cathedral in appearance should remind the church of St. Peter in Rome.

November 14, 1800 was approved by the project the young architect, a former serf of Count Alexander Stroganoff, Andrei Voronikhin. Stroganov himself was appointed chairman of the board of trustees in the construction of the cathedral. 
 Kazan Cathedral was founded September 8 (August 27 old calendar) 1801 in the presence of Emperor Alexander I.

It was planned that construction will be completed in three years, but it lasted ten years. The new cathedral was consecrated by Metropolitan Ambrose 27 (15 old style) in September 1811, in the same year, was demolished Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. Finishing work continued until the end of the temple in 1829.

The cathedral has a shape of a Latin cross , the entrance is located on the west, and the chancel in the east.

By the northern facade of the cathedral is adjacent colonnade of 96 kannelyurovannyh (ie, "drawn by" longitudinal grooves) of columns Corinthian height of about 13 meters, set in four rows. Its ends terminated monumental portico, made as a through passage. In contrast to the colonnade of St. Peter's in Rome, which "closes" the square, the colonnade of the Kazan Cathedral "disclosed" to the Nevsky Prospect.
