Sergiev Posad
Sergiev Posad

Located 40 miles to the North from Moscow St. Trinity Sergius Monastery was founded in the 14th century by famous Russian saint Sergey Radonezhsky. In 1782 with the special order of empress Ekaterina II the Monastery and several villages around  had received a status of the Town which was named  Sergiev Posad. In 1919 the original name was changed to Sergiev, then in 1930 to Zagorsk (in the honor of famous Russian revolutionary) and was finally  restored to Sergiev Posad only in 1991.

From the time of its foundation Sergiev Posad has been the place of holy pilgrimage to the Russian people. And till now it is the place where you can see all sorts of representatives of the modern Russian Orthodoxy. The heart of Holy Trinity Lavra - the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Troitsky sobor) -was built in the 1420s and distinguished by its gleaming-white exterior topped with gold domes. The interior, lit by oil lamps, is covered in icons that are largely the work of the great medieval painter Andrei Rublev. Behind the Trinity Cathedral is the Vestry (Ritznitsa), which contains the monastery's rich treasury.
