Kolomenskoye Museum-Estate
Kolomenskoye Museum-Estate

First mentioned in the testament of Ivan Kalita in 1339, Kolomenskoye Estate was originally the patrimony of Moscow princes, then tsars. In 1528-1532 tsar  Vasilii III built here a famous pyramidal church of the Ascension- now the most elaborate surviving masterpiece of the old Russian architecture. Then in 1547-1554  another Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible constructed here the Church of beheading of St. John the Baptist. Kolomenskoye was also the favorite place for him to celebrate his name-day.

But with its real flourishing Kolomensoe was owed to tsar Alexey Mikhaylovich, the father of Peter the Great. In 1667-1668 he built gorgeous Wooden Palace with its more than 270 rooms. Later young Peter the Great often came here.

After the death of Alexey Mikhailovich Kolomenskoye was abondoned and in the time of the reign of Ekaterina II the old palace was demolished.

But even though this wooden structure has not survived until nowadays, a wooden model is still to be seen in the museum, amid other pieces of the old Russian woodcarving, ironwork and ceramics displayed in the Front Gate and Chambers of Orders.
