ART OF TRAVEL...TO RUSSIA!
Russian gypsy dance

Gypsies came to Russia at seventeenth century, after a  long way which they were going during more than one  thousand years, crossing Asia, Byzantium, Europe and Balkan,  after they had left their motherland India in sixth century.

And it can be said safely that there is no other country where they were accepted with such love and  hospitality as they were accepted in Russia.

Russian and Gipsy musical cultures had been  coincided so much   and   had been so closely intertwined   to each other that now it is even  hard  to remember that the vast majority of the present  Gipsy romances are indeed  old Russian romances sung once by Roma people, and many movements of feet from the Gipsy dance were taken from the Russian folk dances.

Since eighteenth century so-called Gipsy choruses started  gaining popularity in Russian aristocratic circles, the Gipsy art of singing and dancing  were appreciated so much, that it was impossible to imagine a holiday or celebration without invitation of the artists from Gipsy camp. Many aristocrats married Gypsy women, whose beauty and talent were sung  in poems and works of great Russian writers such as Pushkin, Leskov, Gorky. Or the point was indeed in  the mystical magic power, which was associated with Gypsy women from the times immemorial.

After the  revolution of 1917 the  Gypsies, thanks to their poverty were not persecuted by Soviet Government and their culture continued to develop – in thirty’s were even formed first Gypsy Theatres ( as well-known Moscow Gypsy Theater called «The Romaine”), gypsy artists were invited to play in Soviet films.

During Second Word Wide War their performances , conducted right on the fields of battles, inspired soviet soldiers and  encouraged them for Victory.

In the 60th, obeying  the low, they had to left their camp life and moved to usual houses, but didn't lose  their artistic gift, and were especially popular at the time of Brezhnev, at the end of the 70th and in the 80th. This period is  fairly considered as a top of the Soviet Gipsy culture :  live, bright, joyful performances of Roma gave the  feelings of happiness, and songs spoke about freedom which soviet   people in that times did not had.

After disintegration of the Soviet Union,  the Gipsy culture in Russia again for a while dies away, however at this time the Gipsy musical  collectives are extremely demanded abroad by  immigrants who felt nostalgia about their motherland Russia.

In 2000th, due to  high demand for  entertaining,  which  was the  the consequence of the  general economic recovery in Russia, it was observed a  rise in the Gipsy artistic environment. However exactly from that moment it  took place also a  negative effect of this abundance - highly paid  performances of  Gipsy collectives induced many “ non Roma” artists  to present themselves  "as Roma" that of course had depreciated a lot gypsy skill, because all the fake can be externally indistinguishable from the original, but it never gives the same energy and charisma to the spectator.  And many "non Gipsy" actors having quickly adopted external effective attributes had missed the fact that the Gipsy art is extremely difficult, it needs a long learning:  it is  not that without a  reason Roma people have a tradition of artistic dynasties, where the artist  start training dancing  in a family almost before he start to walk.

Now days the Russian Roma Dances are known and loved worldwide and have admirers among many world celebrities (so, for example, the American singer Madonna in 2009 specially invited a family of the Russian Roma  imiigrant, living in Norway,  for preparation of performance for her   world tour).

Mission of the our Gypsy dance school  consists in teaching the girls and the women to  this unique skill which by right is considered as one  of the brightest properties of our country.
